Firkin time.

We will be tapping another of those firkins on Saturday, Apr. 22, 2017 at noon. This time, it’s Smoked Red with sage. Better stop in and see what the heck head brewer Conor has been experimenting with. We are very intrigued…

Larry Myer. Live music.

Larry Myer live music at West O Beer

We love our Iowa singer/songwriters, and here’s another to add to the list. Larry Myer is an energetic singer, songwriter and acoustic performer. He has played more than 200 towns in his homestate of Iowa and more than half the states of America, working his way up from a busking street performer to concert venues around the country. He has released two recordings, the landmark "Flatlands" CD and the followup, "The Ring and Other Ballads".  Larry is also a winner of the Branson Songwriting Contest.

"Myer's voice is the trademark of Iowa's best acoustic rock. His lyrics are gentle yet biting. His voice simultaneously pleads and demands."
The Des Moines Register

Welcome Larry Myer to the tasting room on April 8, 2017, 7–10pm.

Rock’n Bac’n Brew’n 2017

Time once again for Rock’n Bac’n Brew’n, and West O is again one of the main sponsors along with Doll Distributing. If you are anywhere near Spencer IA you know all about this (3rd) annual event. Here’s some details:

  • We will have 2 beers on tap for sale (CocO Stout and 6 Foot 6 IPA)
  • West O will have a booth with samples from 3-8 (Only CocO Stout and 6 Foot 6)
  • Our famous Giant Jenga and Bean Bag Toss will be there

Is West O Beer open year round? Of course!

It’s true that some of The Lakes closes up shop during winter…but not us. Our West Okoboji tasting room is open year round, every day* but Mondays, weekends are hopping, and Wednesdays are our famous West O Wednesday.

West O Beer - West Okoboji - Open Year Round

So come visit us! The tasting room is warm, the atmosphere is warmer, and there are plenty of craft brews on tap, including our gold medal-winning CocO Stout. Order in some food. And oh yeah: kids are welcome – games to play – even root beer on tap.

See you soon. Cheers!

Tues–Fri: 2 to 10, Sat: noon to 10, Sun: noon to 8, Closed Mondays. WEST O WEDNESDAY: 2 to 10, Growler/Pint Discounts All Day

(Not to mention that brewing beer is that 24/7 behind-the-scenes thing that laughs at us if we try to put it on a schedule, but that’s another story.)

CocO Barrel #1 to Iowa Taproom!

There is one keg of the very limited release CocO Barrel #1…you know, the barrel-aged-cherry-infused-awesomeness…slipping out our door and headed to the Iowa Taproom.

So if you were bummed because you were closer to Des Moines than West Okoboji Lake when the bottle release sold out in 5 hours flat, here’s your chance to savor. Plan to hang around, because there will also be giveaways and meet-and-greet some of the West O staff, and stuff.

That’s Friday, Feb. 3, 4 to 6pm. Iowa Taproom at 215 East 3rd Street in Des Moines. See you there. Bring your friends…they’ll thank you.

Winter Games 2017.

New HoodieLet the Winter Games begin! It’s a jam-packed weekend at the Lakes, and we’re all over it. Watch for us at places like Brats & Brews and the Fat Tire Challenge and the Home Brewers Guild. Then chill with us in the tasting room:

  • Live music! Friday with Clint Riedel 7-10, AND Saturday, 7-10 with Midnight Squires.
  • Probably our new hoodie is a must-have.
  • How about beer or root beer floats? Ask us Saturday afternoon…while they last.

Here’s the link to the official University of Okoboji Winter Games website. Plan accordingly, and we’ll see you somewhere, or everywhere.

Craft Beer 101.

Listen up…Iowa Lakes Community College has a New Year’s resolution you cannot pass up. You know you like craft beer, and you kind of know which way you lean. Hoppy! Strong! Dark! Light! Well, check out this February 2nd event, because your beer journey continues here, grasshopper.

Drink local, friends, because this event is sponsored by Doll Distributing in Spencer and hosted at the Hy-Vee Clubhouse Room in Spencer, and presented by West O and Sierra Nevada. Did we mention there will be samples? Yes, because you can’t learn about the finer points of craft beer without samples.

It’s the best ten bucks you will spend to ring in the new year. Register now: 800-252-5664 or visit www.iowalakes.edu/ce

Here’s our path to 270.

pathto279

With all the talk about so-and-so’s “path to 270” it seemed only fair for us to jump in. So say hello (if you haven’t already) to the West O 270 Degrees Series.

270logoThe 270° Series is our premium pathway to beers that raise the bar even more than our normal raising of the bar that you are used to. We spare nothing on the ingredients, and spare nothing on the process. The result? Opposite end of the spectrum of, say, a lawnmower beer. These limited seasonals will beg you to relax and savor and share with your friends.

The lineup is growing, and here’s what’s on tap (and bottles):

Punk’d Pie Belgian-style Dubbel: available now, is rich and malty like you expect from a Belgian-style Dubbel, with mild hop bitterness, a medium body, and some right-down-the-middle pumpkin pie spice notes. Available on tap and premium bottles in 4-packs.

10 Foot 10 Double IPA: The big beer you have come to love is back soon. It’s a Double India Pale Ale that is big on bitterness, tall on hop aroma, and, um, double on the alcohol. Complexity and maturity coming through. Available in late November or early December 2016 on tap and premium bottles in 4-packs.

And a December Surprise: Interested in a whiskey-barrel-aged CocO Stout? Compound that interest with cherries. Then picture it in a proper 750ml bottle. That’s just a teaser, and we’re just getting started. Stay tuned.

And whatza 270, you ask? The clues are here, for starters. Think “Directions and Degrees.” Enjoy.
